This hot dog chili recipe took me many years to get just right! It reminds me of the chili I had as a kid.

Directions
- Gather all ingredients, including your finely diced onion.
- Brown the beef and onion:
- Place ground beef and 1-2 tablespoons of finely diced onion in a large saucepan; use a potato masher to break apart the beef.
- Cook together over medium heat until the beef is browned and the onions are softened and translucent — about 5-7 minutes.
- Drain off any excess fat from the beef and onions.
- Stir in the remaining ingredients:
- Beef broth (or water), tomato sauce, ketchup, chili powder, salt, black pepper, sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne pepper, and liquid smoke (if using).
- Simmer:
- Bring to a boil, then simmer over medium heat until the beef is cooked and the chili thickens, about 20 minutes.
- Serve over hot dogs and enjoy!
